The way we talk about the energy transition often centres on infrastructure, policy and technology. But in practice, it tends to come back to something simpler, which is whether people feel they understand what is changing around them and whether they feel able to take part in it.
The EG Academy was originally developed as part of our Great North Road Solar and Biodiversity Park proposal, with that in mind. It was created to give local communities access to the kind of knowledge and opportunities that can sometimes feel just out of reach, particularly in a sector that is moving quickly. Over time, it became clear that this was not something needed in just one place, so we have opened it up to you.
The EG Academy is a free, CPD-accredited learning platform for anyone who wants to better understand where energy is heading, or explore how they might fit into it. That might be someone at the start of their career, someone rethinking their direction, or someone who simply wants to feel more confident in conversations about energy and climate. Each course is designed to be practical and something that can support a CV, help with a career move, or provide a clearer sense of how the sector works in practice.
As the platform has developed, we have also been working with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) to introduce a new biodiversity module. That partnership reflects a shared understanding that renewable energy and nature cannot be treated as separate conversations, and the RSPB bring a depth of ecological knowledge that helps ground how solar and energy storage projects are planned, assessed and managed over time.
The module offers a practical introduction to that thinking. It looks at the planning and legal context, the role of Biodiversity Net Gain, and how habitats and species are considered across the lifecycle of a project. It also explores the importance of baseline data and long-term monitoring, not just as a requirement, but as a way of understanding what is actually changing over time.
The intention is not to overtly simplify the subject, but to make it easier to engage with. The transition to clean energy is not something that happens at a distance, it depends on people having access to the right information and feeling comfortable enough to be part of the conversation and drive action.
